The Between the Wars sequence, also known as the Pyat Quartet, is a fictional autobiography of Maxim Arturovitch Pyatnitski, colloquially known as Colonel Pyat. Pyat, a resident of Notting Hill during the 1970s, suffered a heart attack during the 1977 Notting Hill carnival when a group of revellers entered his shop. After his death his papers were deposited with local writer, Michael Moorcock who then proceeded to edit them into a publishable form over the next 30 years.
The title comes from Moorcock's working title for the Quartet: "A History of Mrs Cornelius Between The Wars".[1]
Taken together, the individual titles of the four novels in the sequence form the couplet:
- Byzantium endures the laughter of Carthage;
- Jerusalem commands the vengeance of Rome.
