Simon of Byzantium. A soldier-of-fortune who impliedly becomes a temporary avatar of the Eternal Champion, he begins the story as a philosophical realist/materialist skeptical of the existence of supernatural forces. Despite his becoming a participant in, and direct witness to, a long series of dramatic supernatural events, Simon retains materialist beliefs at the story’s end.
Born in Thrace’s town of Abdera, Simon became Byzantine by adoption. Just prior to the beginning of The Greater Conqueror, he has spent 7 years in Byzantium as a Captain of Infantry; at the story’s outset, he is a mercenary looking for work within Alexander the Great’s army in Babylon.
