A Square in London.

It stands on land formerly occupied by the North Star Farm and the Sporting Club Tavern, built up by Dandy Bob Begg. There was a field behind the square.

According to various sources,[1] Sir Hubert Alhambra Begg was the Square's architect and it was built between 1885 and 1901. These facts are contradicted by The Gazetteer of Disappearances and Deletions‎, which claims the Square was the brainchild of Sir Oswald Begg and built between 1885 and 1895. (In the version in London Bone and Other Stories this was changed to Sir Hubert Begg.

Briefly named North Star Square, Sporting Club Square is described as "twenty-six unique mansions blocks, mostly of red brick, each with fifteen to twenty flats, each flat different, each long-established tenant as idiosyncratic as the architecture".[2] At the centre of the Square grows an immense tree, known as the Duke's Elm.

It survived the London Blitz remarkably unscathed but some of its flats were abandoned by their tenants and then taken over by the British government to house hundreds of refugees, including many Jewish political exiles.

Various members of the Von Bek and Moorcock families have been residents of the Square, including Sir Seaton Begg, Edwin Begg, Lady Eleanor Moorcock and the Countess Rose von Bek. Other associated residents include Sam Oakenhurst and Colinda Dovero.
