A fix-up Elric novel, originally published in Science Fantasy magazine in the United Kingdom in 1963-1964. The first version of the novel was abridged and revised from the magazine publication. The novel was revised in 1977 bringing it closer to the original novellas and revised again for incorporation into the Omnibuses. It was further revised/restored for inclusion in the Del Rey Chronicles of the Last Emperor of Melniboné collections.

Different Versions

There have been at least five different versions of Stormbringer. In publication order these are:

  • The four original Science Fantasy novellas (1963-4)
  • The abridged/restructured Stormbringer novel (1965)
  • The restored/revised Stormbringer novel (1977)
  • The Stormbringer/Elric: The Stealer of Souls omnibuses (Orion, 1993/White Wolf, 1998)
  • The Elric: The Stealer of Souls collection (Del Rey, 2008)

The 1965 novel had about a quarter of the text removed for reasons of length (mostly in the second and third novellas) and the remaining text re-arranged with new 'bridging' material added to make sense of the restructuring.

The 1977 novel restored the original novellas structure/text but was also revised with some material excised so doesn't contain all the (unrevised) Science Fantasy material.

The novel was revised once more for its inclusion in the Orion/White Wolf omnibus series The Tale of the Eternal Champion but the original version of Zarozinia's death was included by mistake. (This may have been corrected in later editions.)

Lastly (most recently) the version of Stormbringer featured in the Del Rey collection finally restored all the original material missing since the 1977 novel - which had formed the basis for all later editions - as well as Moorcock's preferred versions of all the revised material in an attempt to produce a 'definitive' text.
