Mike Says

  • "I wrote The Final Programme in 1965 and bits of it (slightly cut up) were reprinted in New Worlds. It took a while for the book to be published, since the first publishers who saw it pronounced it, among other things, 'evil', 'incoherent' and one suggested I should write a 'proper' novel (I had already written several!) because it was clear I hadn't learned to write one yet. However, I took this to heart and wrote The Ice Schooner, for instance, just to make sure I COULD write a proper novel. Allison and Busby bought the book around the time they bought Behold the Man,while Avon in the US commissioned the whole sequence. But these delays meant that the novel itself wasn't published for several years after being written."[1]
