A collection of five stories by Michael Moorcock featuring Elric of Melniboné, which were originally published in the pages of Science Fantasy between 1962 and 1963, the periodical edited by John Carnell, who first encouraged Moorcock to write the early Elric novellas. It has the distinction of being the first Moorcock book to be published.

The original hardcover and paperback editions were dedicated to Moorcock's mother. The dedication was omitted from later UK paperback editions.
